Since in 1818 there was a strong cholera epidemic in the Rădăuţi area, during which many inhabitants died (documents of the time speak of the fact that entire families disappeared during that epidemic), the Austrian administration decided to establish a civil hospital.
On August 21, 1858, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian crown, Archduke Rudolf, was born.
Taking advantage of this event, the prefect of Rădăuţi County, Mr. Pitey, submitted a request to the Court of Vienna, accompanied by the written decision of the mayors of the two city communes (the German commune of Rădăuți and the Moldovan commune of Rădăuţi).
On June 23, 1863, the foundation stone of the new hospital was laid, and the works were completed in 1866. The building was a single-story building until 1876. The first name of the hospital was "Kronprint Rudolf Spital", in honor of the heir to the crown.
